I don’t know where to start this week…..volunteers, olympians, AGM, awards, dad dancing, youth forum, etc, etc.
Ahead of the AGM at the weekend I met with some of our dedicated volunteers and parents to discuss how we ensure we provide our members with a voice and opportunities to contribute to club activities in a co-ordinated way. It was great to see such pro-active and passionate people wanting to make the club a fabulous place to swim and be. We discussed the need to empower our volunteers and parents, create more forums for them to share new opportunities or even concerns and to hear from the club about what the current priorities are. It was a very positive conversation and I was able to share a draft volunteering structure and principles that I invited further comment on. Will keep everyone updated on progress.
It was a pleasure to help host the club’s Awards and Celebration Evening at the weekend. It being my first I have nothing to compare it against, but I certainly had a great time, with my personal highlights being;
– Proud swimmers
– Talk by Olympian
– Dad dancing (you know who you are!)
A great deal of effort went into ensuring it looked great and ran smoothly, with special mentions to Clara, Thelma, Emily, Fergus, Marie, Andrea and the Squad Reps. I also need to apologise profusely for my very poor pronunciation of some swimmer names (that’s mainly for you Jacques!).
This might seem a funny thing to say but I also enjoyed the AGM last Sunday. It’s great to be able to share what we are thinking about, doing and planning as a charity (as well as formally rounding off the 2016-17 year). Although it would have been nice to have more people there, members questions were contructive and thought provoking. It was nice to be able to paint an improved financial picture for the charity from last year as well as sharing a need to make our foundations a little more concrete. Minutes from the AGM should be published over the next week once finalised.
The ironic thing about talking about the new IT system and determining who communications are not reaching, is that you won’t be reading this if that is you. We are in a difficult place at the moment where we believe c95% of our emails sent from within our new system, Swim Club Manager, are getting through, but working out who is not getting it is more tricky without waiting for complaints to come in. As I mentioned at the AGM, the new system could be a game changer for the charity for a number of reasons and we have to keep moving forwards with it and not retreating to the safety of our old spreadsheets. If you are in the squads programme you will have received the usual email link to these notices from within the system, therefore it is working for you. Please ask others if they received the email notification re weekly Notices, to check their junk mail if they didn’t and contact us if it is not in there. We are also going to be setting up and testing the text messaging service soon for emergency comms.
It’s been a busy week so I could go on and on but your time is precious and attention spans short. I am away next week so no update from me but I’m sure there will be plenty of other news.
Have a great week and best of luck to all our swimmers at the County Championships!!!! Go Penguins!!!
