Arena League Round 3 Head Coach Report
Prospects looked bleak for Penguins to achieve their true league place in this third round gala. The coach was a little late, I sat there changing an already adapted team and was then told that a swimmer doing 5 different races had to be taken out and those races needed to be filled. Some tension definitely existed. We gathered round on poolside for the Team Talk prior to the gala start. We were looking around to see if we could find our missing swimmers. Then it dawned on us; that this small group was IT - the team. (This was the ‘Magnificent Seven’ in swimming gala terms, a small band of talented specialists, up against the odds).
The target was set - to finish the gala in the top 3 - and swimmers were informed that some would be asked to swim out of age group and off stroke. The swimmers took this well and we had an absolutely fabulous gala. If you don’t know the end result, well - we won. But it’s HOW we won that's important, and due credit must go to the team for realising from early on that we were not happy to settle for 3rd or even 2nd place – winning was what they wanted. We had a team galvanised to swim for every point possible. From the early points announcements it was always a very, very close gala. A disqualification, or a poor turn, could cost the team dearly.
The mood changed halfway through the gala from "maybe we could win this" to "we really CAN win this" gala. Our Relay teams, so often a chink in our armour, especially when under pressure from multiple swims, proved our strength, and we never finished outside the top 3 in any relay race on the night.
For our supporters and officials and swimmers it must have been the most exciting set of races this year. I must say I was mightily relieved when it was finally over and openly admit that at times during the night my pride in the team almost overwhelmed me.
Conclusion: Best gala of the year – by far. Swimmers: Brilliant. Supporters and officials: Excellent. Coaching staff: Christmas came early!
