Coaching Staff:

Coaching Responsibilities

The Coaching and Teaching staff aim to provide a training programme for all swimmers that will enable them to learn the value of striving to improve oneself. For the programme to be a success there must be understanding and cooperation between the parents, swimmers and the Coaching/Teaching staff.

  1. The Head Coach is responsible for placing swimmers in one of 8 squads; for the ‘Learn to Swim’ members this responsiblity is delegated to the Lessons Co-ordinator. The allocation of swimmers to one of the competitive training squads will be based upon the physiological age, ability and commitment to the training and competitive programme.
  2. Sole responsibility for stroke correction and instruction and the training regime rests with the Head Coach and as delegated to the Coaching and Teaching staff.
  3. Team selection is at the discretion of the Head Coach in conjunction with other members of the Coaching/Teaching staff.
  4. At competition the Coaching Staff will conduct and supervise warm-up procedures for the team. After each event the Coach may offer constructive criticism regarding the swimmers performance.

We want all swimmers to relate to the Coach concerning swimming matters. To maximise improvement it would be very helpful if parents did not 'coach' their children. This relationship between Coach and swimmers will produce the best results. Sometimes it feels more comfortable to discuss disagreements over coaching philosophy with other parents rather than taking them directly to the Coach. Discussing problems with other parents often results in additional problems being created.

Remember:

  1. You and the Coaching/Teaching staff have the best interest of your child at heart. If you trust that the Coach’s goals match yours, even though the approach may be different, you are more likely to enjoy good rapport and constructive dialogue.
  2. Remember that the Coaching/Teaching staff must balance your perspective of what is best for your child with the needs of all of the TEAM.

If you have a problem, concern or complaint, please contact the Coach, Committee Member or one of the Clubs' Welfare Officers:

Attendance at Training

The following outline guidelines are to inform swimmers and parents of the Coaches expectations regarding attendance at training:

  1. As a general rule, the least possible interruption in the training schedule will produce the greatest amount of success. WCPSC does however encourage younger swimmers to participate in other activities in addition to swimming. The expectation level of the Coach for swimmers to attend more training increases as the swimmer develops and moves into the more senior squads.
  2. Please make every effort to ensure that you arrive at training on time. Ideally swimmers should be ready to swim at least 5 minutes prior to the start of the session to carry out appropriate land warm-up. However as we have to follow the rules imposed by the pool operators certain rules have to be followed. It should be noted that these are from time to time revised so please check notice boards and web site regularly.
  3. Swimmers will be required to bring all training equipment (including drinks) to all sessions. It is the swimmer’s responsibility to make sure these items are properly adjusted and ready to use.
  4. At some training sessions announcements may be made, so please be on the poolside on time.
  5. If your swimmer will be out of the water for a long period of time due to injury or illness, please notify the Coach.

Remember to check the notice board for changes or additions to training sessions and to check that the coach is present, WCPSC is not responsible for the safety or welfare of swimmers until they are pool side. Parents should be at the venue in good time to pick up swimmers at the end of the training session.
