Swimming Lessons with Winchester City Penguins Swimming Club

WInchester City Penguins Swimming Club runs a successful Learn to Swim programme, which is separate from the competitive swimming club, but provides a great opportunity to develop swimming skills. The programme is run by our lessons co-ordinator, Chris Stride, along with a team of dedicated swimming teachers (all ASA qualified).

Lessons start for children aged 5 years and above, from non-swimmers to pre-competitive. We run a structured teaching programme around the ASA’s National Plan for Teaching Swimming. Children are assessed on their ability at the end of each term for progression on to the next level. We reward achievement through the ASA awards scheme.

The Learn to Swim Programme

• Lessons are run by fully ASA qualified instructors, with assistance from senior competitive swimmers within the club.
• Usually there is a high ratio of instructors to swimmers. The focus is on instilling confidence and a love of the water. We find that this is essential and enables rapid progress later on.
• Children's lessons are held on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon at Kings School, and Friday evening and Saturday morning at Winchester River Park Leisure Centre.
• Lessons are booked and paid for in advance in blocks of typically 10-14 weeks.
• We cater for all levels from complete beginner through to ASA National Teaching Plan level 9.
• After level 9, swimmers are usually ready to move into the club’s Flipper squads.
